The blog has moved...

You've reached my old blog... In order to simplify my blog, my portfolio and my life, I combined my blog and site into one. Now you can find my "blog" entries on my Recent Work page. You can also view my portfolio, link to slideshows and client information, and locate anything else you might need all in one place.

This blog contains old session blog posts, and my failed 2011 attempt at "One Image a Day" project in which I force myself to shoot something each day, personal or professional, as a challenge to myself. I'd love to hear what you think of the images as they might slightly stray from the norm. We'll see if I can pick it up for 2012!

Sometimes things just come together so perfect.  Monday night was one of those nights.  Kelly and I did some back and forth on the date… a little nervous it might rain, a little nervous a tooth might fall out before we could get this done… but when I arrived at the simply stunning grounds where we’d arranged to meet, it all just came together.  The light was divine.  The temperature was perfect.  There were no misquotes (if you know me, you know I have an obsessive hatred of them right now).  The outfits were straight out of “What to Wear” and the girls were truly wonderful.

I am simply beyond thrilled with what I captured.  Kelly, thank you so much.  I cannot wait for your big family session!

North Shore Peeps… stay tuned… next week I’ll be announcing some local mini sessions that you can take advantage of in preparation for holiday card season… yes, it’s approaching that fast!

I had my first beach session of the year (outside of a few cold days down in Quogue with my own kiddos).  It was Ah-MAY-zing.  Here I go again… but really, do you realize how fortunate I am that I show up to meet clients and I just love them?  My client this morning asked me if I ever get tough clients and I laughed and said “Honestly?  I love everyone who hires me.”

Megan picked the date and then and we worried a bit early in the week about weather… and a little cut or bruise here and there… then about the wind… but I think we can both say that everything was perfect.  Including her kids.  I think we were able to get some traditional family portraits with really fun candids mixed in and I love how everything came together.  The outfits were perfect…it’s like the sky called and said “wear some blue.”  Needless to say, this is tagged in “What to Wear!”

Love.

Seriously. AMAZING.OUTFITS. When Tracey emailed that she had the kids outfits picked out, I was psyched. I was probably 10,000 time more psyched when I saw them in person. It’s like she said “sky, grass, road, trees, we are are showing up in these colors, now you match.” And everything did! Enough of that, Tracey’s kids were really good. Like really good. And really friendly and knew my name right off the bat, new my friend Harry’s name, new my kid’s name… they conversed with me, I totally felt like I was “in like flynn” with them. Love. We checked out the old haunts of River Road and then they were such awesome sports about checking out a new location with me. And man did I LOVE the new location! I am so excited to shoot there more often, esp at sunset. But the cool thing is that no matter how many sessions I shoot there, Tracey can say “oh, yeah, well, we shot there first…”

I’d say my only regret about the entire morning is that I didn’t get to chill with Tracey enough. She is so cute (and in such great shape, triathlon girl) and there were a ton of things I could have caught up talking to her about. But I guess we’ll get to that if we figure out holiday cards + a bottle of wine!

Tracey and co, awesome morning (I know, I overuse the word awesome). Can’t wait to get you the full gallery! Thank you!

Before you all start singing my praises… I did NOT come up with this idea.  Although I have always given guidelines on what to wear, and I have a What to Wear section in my client information packet, the idea of blogging What to Wear is not mine.  Many photographers do this.  But I did hijack the idea because we are upon the Holiday Card time of year and I’d like to offer up some ideas.  These are just ideas, I am not suggesting you spend the $612 or so that I just pulled together on Mom’s outfit at Boden.  But… if you are going to Boden, check out their Outfit Maker!  It’s fabulous!  {it also drew attention to the fact I dress like a dud, another story entirely.}

It took me at least an hour to come up with this, so I do know it’s not an easy task.  Things I kept in mind… I started with mom… because if mom looks good, everyone will have a much better day.  I also believe that if a mom is not comfortable in her outfit, she will generally feel bad about herself and not like the pictures.  I am telling you this because (1) I know it’s true and (2) I am that mom.   So moms… start with you and work out.  Once I had her outfit pulled together (and again, can’t sing enough praises about the Outfit Maker), I started on the boy… there was a Boden sweater I just loved that was the same aqua but with an argyle.  But after dressing boy & girl in aqua, mom in aqua, it didn’t leave me with much for Dad.  If everyone is dressed identical, it’s just plain boring.  I also decided to play it a bit more safe because aqua is a big color, so doing an aqua argyle was a bit too bold of a statement for me.  I loved the aqua and brown because it screams fall with a tiny little nod to the ocean!  I added in the cream pants for the dad (ok, light brown, sorry Owen, I won’t put you in cream) because I thought Mom & Dad would look great together and it would tie in nicely if you did cream tights for mom or the girl.  I also have some cream accents in the mom’s necklace.  Finally, I imagined the pairings you’d do in a session… Mom & Dad, Mom & Son, etc. and everyone seemed to really compliment each other.

Next week I’ll focus on a Gap or Old Navy option, then a more formal one with perhaps Olive Juice dresses for the girls!  Please leave me some love and let me know if you found this to be at all helpful!

Whattowear

July 6, 2009

I was so excited to shoot this session as my first summer session of 2009 down in the Hamptons (well, the first of the summer that didn’t include Janey, Christofer or Kaliegh). I knew this family would be awesome just from the few emails and phone calls we exchanged… they just sort of had it together. The session was Nancy’s idea –  as it’s her birthday later in the month — what a way to celebrate… have the family all together and document it!  The kids (and grandkids) were all in town to celebrate summer and some family events, including a very important first birthday or a gorgeous little boy who is just 3 days older than my girl Janey. The three kiddos were so happy and fun and completely held it together, which as you know, is sometimes a challenge. I could sit here and blog these images all day except (1) I am late on things I owe other people so I’ll try to be fair, (2) my kids are both losing their minds and I am sure bribing Christofer with a cupcake isn’t going to get the end result I want or need (calm and quiet), and (3) I am running out of hard drive space and so I need to back up before I can edit anything else! I know, more detail than you need, but an explanation as to why you are seeing a small number of images versus the 30 I really want to post for you!

Family H, it was really great to meet you. I hope our paths cross the next time I am down. Everything was perfect. Thank you!
