Sometimes I am not entirely sure Owen gets what I do. I mean I know he gets it, but he doesn’t always GET it. Like he is a little foggy on why I race home from a session, upload and then just STARE at the images, transfixed. He is not always clear on why I obsessed with looking into a child’s eyes, magnified to 100%, taking over 12″ of my screen. And sometimes he’s not sure why I make him look at how I tried to capture a connection between two people. I don’t mean it in a bad way, he’s just not into it like I am. And on the occasions where I have given one of his friends a gift certificate to me, he’s sort of thought “but do they want that?” Again, not in a bad way…. just not sure. However, one day he came home and he said “You know my friend Malcolm that I have told you about? They guy that likes photography like you do? He’s having a baby and we could give them one of your newborn sessions!” I was beyond elated. Elated that someone was having a baby, elated he thought of me as a gift he could give! Yay! Success!

I finally got to meet this new baby and she (and her parents) are lovely. She is very little, which of course I am familiar with as Janes is still such a peanut. And she is still very new, at three weeks. And she loves to be swaddled and snuggled up tight and held by her awesome parents. And she is very much a beautiful gift to two very kind, gracious and deserving people. I truly enjoy the time I get to spend with new parents. I love watching them as they figure it out together, as women instantly become mothers, knowing what to do even if they don’t know what to do… and dad’s take over just at the right time and fall in love with their little babies. It gives me immense pleasure to watch this, and to document it.

Malcolm and Lauren, thank you so much for a lovely morning. You are truly blessed.

I am a bad blogger. Not from lack of want, from lack of time. But things have been a little crazy here at Casa de Young [who am I kidding? it's always crazy here]. Anyway, I had a rock star of a Friday morning because I got to spend some time at Joyful Noises photographing a little visit with an Officer of the Law [happily, not the one I met at traffic court, yes, I was worried]. Next I scooted into the city to meet an awesome couple. Then I wrapped it up with a hair visit to my friend who I had not seen in a long time. Finally, I had drinks with Mary Poppins [a.k.a. Mrs Fellows]. Banner day, just banner.

But back to Milo. Milo’s mom’s friend from back home just knew that Milo would be a delicious little baby… so missing her friend, and wanting to see Milo ASAP, she searched the internet, found me, we chatted, she decided on a gift certificate, and voila! What a great friend is that? Maybe I will have to hook up and meet HER when I head out to Erie (hopefully this summer). The great thing about it all is that when I got to Susan and Andy’s home, I realized I really liked them and I was pretty psyched that by chance, they ended up as clients! You know me, within 5 minutes in the door it’s all “oh, so you grew up where and know who?” and then “oh, you work less than 1/4 mile from where my parent’s live and I live within 5 miles of where your parents live?” And so my life goes.

Back to the boy. Milo really was awesome. Once he had a full belly he just slept and slept! Then he got to hang out with Dewey and his ‘rents in his new hood, meet some new neighbors, chill in the city… the good life.

I hope you guys enjoyed your Friday as much as I did. You are totally keeping it real as parents and I love that. Enjoy your little boy!

I loved meeting Clive’s parents… his dad is pushing through that looooooooong last semester at Babson for his MBA. And I know how that feels. And his mom is just beautiful, and looks amazing for 5 weeks postpartum [who am I kidding, she looks better than me at about 92 weeks]. She has an amazing sense of style and had his little nursery just done up right with these wonderful colors and stories!

Couldn’t have started my weekend any better. Really. Thank you.

You knew this baby would be gorgeous. Remember these two? Only they could produce something this adorable. I can’t wait to get back there and shoot some more with both of them!

Carter might have been one of the cutest newborns I have ever seen. I am serious. He had the cutest little perfectly shaped head, and was just so small with big round eyes. Perfection. I am so happy that I was able to capture him on short notice… like the short notice he gave his parents by arriving a few weeks early! But as I talk to two good friends now, who each have about 2 weeks to go, early is good… early is good.

As you all know, my life is endlessly connected (which is why it’s such a good thing I cleaned up my act after college!). And once again, this mom and I were connected. I didn’t blog much about it, but last year I did this super cool project for a phenomenal Day School up here on the North Shore. By far one of the most enjoyable assignments I’ve taken on. I photographed a “Day in the Life” for their website and Viewbook content. So as Mom and I are talking, and she tells me where she teaches, it occurs to me that I have actually photographed her before! And really, she looked as awesome 12 days after having a baby as she did before she was pregnant. Dad was pretty cool too… a surfer, so you know that makes me happy… a really smart surfer, actually! This kid is very lucky having the parents he does.

[Mom from last May.]

So once again, a very amazing Monday… doing what I love. Watching families together, watching them love their new baby, and watching their new baby watch them!

I had a wonderful Saturday morning meeting this babe… you know how I love to ditch my own family to spend time with my client’s! They love in the coolest house in my fav part of the city… it makes me so happy when I can be back in the old Hood. Not only that, I was all set to put it in a Resident Parking spot and deal with the ticket later, but I pulled up and there was an open Visitor’s parking spot RIGHT AT THEIR FRONT DOOR! [If you know me, you know I pride myself on good parking karma].

So once again, you know I am going to tell you how much I liked this family [I sound like I am off my rocker, but I seriously fall in love with my clients when I am with them.] Christie and I just. I would bet that she and I could meet for lunch and not stop talking — parenting, working mom dilemma’s and how cleaning the house just isn’t fun. But she has me beat by a long shot with nursery decor. I am not kidding you when I tell you that this was one of the prettiest nurseries I have ever seen. Not too classic, not too mod, not too trendy, but beautiful with just a bit of whimsical. And awesome light.

So here is yummy baby Olivia who was just so good. It was a pleasure!

Rockabye Sweet Baby James. And Rockabye we did. To little avail. Prior to my Monday sessions, the other times I’d actually seen James, he’d been out like a light. But not for our session. And do you know what? I am TOTALLY great with that. There is this photographer myth that newborns have to be asleep to get awesome images. And yes, it’s much easier to curl them up and pose them when they are. But seeing as that I emit caffeine from my pores, and seemingly wake up every newborn I spend time with, I’ve adjusted my style to really embrace lifestyle moments. And I LOVE it. I might actually chuck the bean bag and the backdrop all together. Really.

There are a few other reasons I am simply in love with this session. I got to spend time chilling with Steph. And then little Gracie (my son’s future prom date) curled up next to me and proceeded to put on every newborn item I had in my bag. And Colin came home to be the amazing older brother. And it was rainy and grey and I shot the 2nd part of the session at f/2.8 ISO 5000. And I knew it would be B&W grainy. And I loved that too.

We have some future plans for Sweet Baby James involving some super cute new things I want to try out. We’ll feature those in the next installment of the Sweet Baby James Show! Stay tuned!

Yes, I realize this is a monster of a sneak peak. And I know I should be doing my taxes. But Steph deserves this!

I blogged just one image of this delicious little boy while I was on vacation and I just had to come back and add some more. He was so little, and so awake! Usually awake newborns are a challenge to work with, but honestly, he was a very content little boy and just sat there looking at the world, and was so happy to by hung over his dad’s arm! I really liked his parents and they live in a town that is so near and dear to my heart, where I spent so much time growing up and so I was just happy to be hanging out there on a beautiful day.

When I look at these, it makes me realize that I need to stop stressing about getting the perfect sleeping baby pose and embrace just how lovely it is to see a baby being held and loved by his parents. The more I go back and look, the happier these images make me. I hope you feel the same!

This is Nolan Part 1 really. I have more to blog, but I only have a minute here and there while I am on vacation. I wanted to post at least one because I simply loved spending my Sunday morning with Nolan’s parents. They are really awesome, amazing first time parents, and they live in my favorite town. Their little baby is really, really cute and was really, really awake! I am sure he zonked the minute he heard my car pull away!

Thanks for such a nice morning! More when I can get a quiet minute to myself!

Especially this one. As her mom can tell you, I pretty much harassed her from the time she was 20 weeks pregnant… “Can I do your newborns, can I do your newborns? I know you are at the hospital in labor, but you just call me and tell me when I can come down!”

I’ve known Baby Norah’s mom for a long time now… she was at our wedding, Greek dancing with our people… a hot chick she was. Now she’s a hot mom. Seriously, you would turn green if you saw how good she looks! And as I twittered a few days ago, it prompted me to forgo a glass of wine and got my butt running on the track! Anyway, I absolutely loved seeing Sarah, meeting her mom and her awesome [read: cute and nice] husband, Fred.

So their baby is super cute. Little, little, dainty, so full of expression. She was a good little baby and I captured lots of pretty little images of all her little baby parts!

Sarah… I am so glad we are still connected and part of each other’s lives (ok, Facebook lives). You are awesome. Enjoy motherhood!
I like this one because sometimes I am not sure when to end a session. Do I go for one more? Do I try another wrap? And when this happens I think “Awesome, now I know we are done!”
