I have a bad case of insomnia. I finally got out of bed and decided to flip through the pieces of my old hard drive. I wondered where we were this time last year and went back and found us. We went to the Sanctuary for a morning walk and saw a few eagles. I decided to just proof one. This is it. I feel like I could construct about 5 story lines to talk about what was happening. But instead I’ll construct none and just love it for what it is.

Extraordinarily and incredibly grateful.

For my husband, my kids, my family and friends.

But today I am completely and totally indebted to Western Digital, specifically my friend Constance.

Last summer I came home from vacation with a blown hard drive on my brand new MacBook Pro. I thought to myself “luckily I didn’t keep much on that drive.” All my client work is backed up on portable drives, DVDs and my Drobo unit. All my family stuff is backed up on external drives, with the exception of the last 6 months running, which is on my desktop. Apple recovered my laptop harddrive picture folder and I promptly moved it over to my desktop.

Flash forward two weeks. Come home from vacation and think “hmm, we must have lost power, my Mac is totally off.” Quickly learned that totally off actually meant totally dead. On the bright side, it was covered under warranty. On the dark side, my hard drive was dead. Six months of every day images filed under “Daily Life” were GONE. Along with invoices, bank statements, quicken files, and other mundane details.

Long story short, with a few strange turns, my friend Constance at Western Digital was able to recover my drive in it’s entirety and I received it back this weekend. I have full res files back of some of my most favorite days with my kids and family. I spent last night sifting through them, and backing them up, and ordering more Drobo drives, and backing up more…

Needless to say, today I am beyond happy and at total peace that our family history as I like to tell it, is back in tact, and safe. You know the moral of this story. Here are a few favs… not for any technical merit or review, but just because (as Christofer would say) “they make my heart super happy.”

I actually shot some images of my children today. My thought was now that I am really only a photographer, not a poser in Corporate America, perhaps I could share more of the mundane day to day. So I finally remembered to bust out my camera… and of course it was late in the day, they were covered in snot and they’ll be 32 & 34 before I finish editing them all, but I figured most people have forgotten what they look like, so maybe it’s worth blogging their little mugs. So shot at about ISO 2000, with zero light, a messy background and filthy faces, here they are. God Bless America I love these spastic freaks.

Just a quick one while testing out a 135 f/2 L lens (needs a lot more practice!). I love this face. It’s about as natural a look as I can get from him these days. His other face that he makes is this long. bugged eyed face that he thinks is what I want for looking at the camera. I have to remember not to correct him because he’s trying to be good. Let’s pause for a moment and recognize “trying to be good.” :::::::::::::: Anyway, I love the late day light in my front yard. It comes right through the trees and provides for great soft flat light or amazing backlight. My real dream would be to get him a little closer up and lower down in front of that wall. Yummy background texture. But I am pretty sure if I did that he would look really angry or run the other way, so I will take what I can get.

After considerable conversation with some friends, I need to make mention that I didn’t “do” her eyes. Those are her whites, they are that clear, she has that much depth in them. It’s all about finding the light. This is actually pretty high ISO, I just have her close to the sliding door for a direct light source, there is a window far away but from the other direction, so it’s sort of like there are giant natural light softboxes all around the room. I love her little elfin face!

Summertime Catch Up.

I am forcing myself to not work tonight and to just be lazy. But since that’s sort of tough for me to do, I decided to look through some personal images from earlier this summer. I happened to download these on my laptop, before it broke, earlier this summer. Luckily, these files were recovered. I lost a lot more on my other harddrive, and that makes me so incredibly sad. Anyway, I decided to attempt to proof just a few, the rest will have to wait until that day in the future, hopefully not too far away (January) when I have down time to do something with all of my family photographs.

So here are some, in no particular order. Processed all over the board. More to come later.

Now don’t be thinking I’ll be doing this every day. I just couldn’t think of a title. Loving this shot of these two. They play so well together, they just love each other. Maybe I’ll get off my butt and print this for Jody and I. Maybe not though. Yeah, I will. As a standout mount with linen texture.

So as you might know, from the number of complaints that I thrown out just about everywhere, I managed to break my IBM laptop (keyboard… can Diet Coke really do that?), my Mac (the hard drive, not my fault, it’s brand new for God’s sake), and my Blackberry (wine, Janey’s saliva, salty air). Unfortunately it had a few day’s of our time in Quogue plus the Rockport images on it… TBD when I get to the Apple Store if those still exist. No customer sessions, but has limited how much I can work on things, so I am very backed up.

I managed to salvage a few images of a card before I reformatted… I was pretty excited to see these, seeing as I really thought I captured a few good sibling shots on the dunes. This is the best. No, really, it is. This isn’t an outtake, this is it. Needless to say, we don’t have the holiday card photo yet by a long shot. But I wanted to post this because so many clients often say to me “your kids are lovely and you capture such beautiful images of them, my kids never behave.” Listen up. Neither do mine. The good thing is that I can almost always make yours behave for a split second, and I don’t even threaten time-outs to do it!

Anyway, here they are. I love them to pieces and might actually frame this little number. Oh, who am I kidding, I can’t get around to framing anything. But at least I know it’s there.

More to come over the course of next week as I edit all the pictures from yesterday. Here are the kids… 12 of them under 9. Most of them are just months apart from each other. I smell trouble in about 6 years. Never mind, they are trouble enough now!

As I’ve pretty much broadcasted everywhere, my babies had their birthday’s this week/weekend. The neat thing about my kid’s “birth” day is that they were both born on the first Monday of July just after 5AM. Christofer was six days early, Janey eleven. I love that their birthday’s are so close together, that they are exactly two years apart, that they are a little boy and a little girl. I am so eternally grateful that I have these two children that most of the time I am actually nauseous when I think of them, so sick to my stomach that I won’t be able to keep them safe, so terrified that I love them just so much. Then one of them screams hysterically and/or won’t nap and then I sort of snap out of it for a minute. But still, I’d take sleepless nights and teething and temper tantrums over not having them any minute of my life.

So here are a few shots of Christofer from the weekend and Janey from this afternoon. I edited these on my laptop, so for all I know, they are green, red, blown out and everything else bad. The ones inside today are ridiculously high ISO and a tungsten bulb and so the color is wonky and noisy so I just decided to make it more so. So that’s my disclaimer, especially if I go upstairs and look on my desktop and freak. Now I don’t have to, we all know they are shot.

[btw, how ADORABLE is that dress? A gift from some very lovely friends, I believe from Shock Kids in Westhampton Beach... I knew the minute I opened the package last year she'd wear it for just a minute on her birthday!]
