The blog has moved...

You've reached my old blog... In order to simplify my blog, my portfolio and my life, I combined my blog and site into one. Now you can find my "blog" entries on my Recent Work page. You can also view my portfolio, link to slideshows and client information, and locate anything else you might need all in one place.

This blog contains old session blog posts, and my failed 2011 attempt at "One Image a Day" project in which I force myself to shoot something each day, personal or professional, as a challenge to myself. I'd love to hear what you think of the images as they might slightly stray from the norm. We'll see if I can pick it up for 2012!

This is a shameless plug from someone that never makes shameless plugs.  I don’t enter my kids (or my photos) in contests, I pretty much just go with the flow.  But I’ve entered myself in a “We are Millers” contest and I’d love your vote!

Millers is where I print all my prints, canvases and albums.  I switched to them this February after having a lot of print and color issues with the other place I was printing.  I seriously never looked back.  If you’ve received a B&W print from me this year, you know what I am talking about.  The crispness and clarity is INSANE.  They print on true B&W paper and so there are never any stray color bleeds (often you’ll see a pale magenta, green, yellow or blue).  Their color prints are fabulous too.  I’ve started using them for albums, print boxes, those cute little gift albums… you name it.

So they are having this contest to essentially be the face of Millers and get your studio in an advertisement.  It’s not a huge monetary prize, but great recognition.  I really wanted to enter because I believe so fully in their product and service.  For me, it doesn’t matter the question, Millers is the answer.

I decided I’d do a B&W submission of me with some B&Ws.  I left it until the last minute, as I always do.  I tried a few setups and was taking a few test shots, and gracefully tripped on my camera remote cord, pulled over my tripod, and dented my lens (which was a rental lens while my other dented lens is out being fixed… see a pattern here?).   After 13 Valium, I recovered and decided to submit the one decent image I pulled out.  It’s not how I envisioned it t all, but I like to make lemonade, so I went ahead and entered it in the contest.

So here I am, in all my glory.  I’d love for you to vote for me.  You can vote once a day until September 4th.  I will post this on FB every day until then, my apologies and thanks in advance!  If you are feeling kind, please also post on YOUR Facebook page or email to friends so I can get even more votes!

Just a quick one while testing out a 135 f/2 L lens (needs a lot more practice!).  I love this face.  It’s about as natural a look as I can get from him these days.  His other face that he makes is this long. bugged eyed face that he thinks is what I want for looking at the camera.  I have to remember not to correct him because he’s trying to be good.  Let’s pause for a moment and recognize “trying to be good.” ::::::::::::::  Anyway, I love the late day light in my front yard.  It comes right through the trees and provides for great soft flat light or amazing backlight.  My real dream would be to get him a little closer up and lower down in front of that wall.  Yummy background texture.  But I am pretty sure if I did that he would look really angry or run the other way, so I will take what I can get.

After considerable conversation with some friends, I need to make mention that I didn’t “do” her eyes.  Those are her whites, they are that clear, she has that much depth in them.  It’s all about finding the light.  This is actually pretty high ISO, I just have her close to the sliding door for a direct light source, there is a window far away but from the other direction, so it’s sort of like there are giant natural light softboxes all around the room.   I love her little elfin face!

I am so pleased to announce that Kristina Young Photography has joined forces with Think Pink Photography. Think Pink Photography was founded in October 2007 to support individuals and their families who have been touched by breast cancer. It is a charitable organization that serves two main purposes – celebrating life and supporting the cause.

Through their professional photographer network, they help breast cancer patients to celebrate life with charitable photography sessions. Individuals may choose to document their fight against the disease before or during treatment, or prefer to capture their victory by scheduling a session within 12 months after treatment is completed. There is no cost or obligation to the breast cancer patient. Clients participating in a Think Pink Session will receive a complimentary photo session, as well as a set of 10 small prints from the session. They will also receive a discount on any additional portraits they wish to purchase, although there is absolutely no purchase required at any time.

To support the cause, Think Pink has partnered with The Eric R. Beverly Family Foundation. All funds generated through donations and various fundraising efforts are paid directly to The Eric R. Beverly Family Foundation. As a 3-time breast cancer survivor, Danielle Beverly and her husband Eric joined together to form a foundation dedicated to promoting education, increasing awareness, and providing support and resources for families who have been touched by breast cancer.

I encourage you to view the Think Pink website, make a donation, or hire a photographer that supports Think Pink Photography! If you hire me for a regular, full paid session, mention Think Pink and I will make a personal donation to the organization.

I am very proud to be a network photographer with Think Pink Photography, and am anxious to get the word out about this amazing program. For more information, you can contact me, or you can visit the Think Pink Photography website at:  http://www.thinkpinkphotography.org

If you, or someone you know, would like to schedule a Think Pink session, please contact me for details.

I am forcing myself to not work tonight and to just be lazy.  But since that’s sort of tough for me to do, I decided to look through some personal images from earlier this summer.  I happened to download these on my laptop, before it broke, earlier this summer.  Luckily, these files were recovered.  I lost a lot more on my other harddrive, and that makes me so incredibly sad.  Anyway, I decided to attempt to proof just a few, the rest will have to wait until that day in the future, hopefully not too far away (January) when I have down time to do something with all of my family photographs.

So here are some, in no particular order.  Processed all over the board.  More to come later.

Our night with Melissa & John was absolutely fabulous.  Amy came up from Providence to shoot with me and we had a blast.  Considering we’d never met face-to-face (but we “talk” every day), it was so awesome we could leave all our kids and take off for this shoot.  Of course it was at my favorite location, the weather was amazing, the light just the juiciest… and well… Melissa… Melissa & John… a yummy couple.  After I shot these, I was nervous about whether I could have a repeat performance and come up with something unique for them, but the stars aligned and we just had a blast.  Amy had some clutch ideas of how to spice things up and we are both so pleased with the outcome.  Can’t wait to see her sneak peak!

Melissa and John, it was an amazing night.  Hands down, my favorite part of the night was hearing Melissa tell us how much she loves John, about all the special things he does for her, and just how happy he makes her.  Her natural smile and laugh was so gorgeous and candid — it lit up the whole field.  And the way John looks at Melissa, like she is this fantastic gift that he waited a lifetime to receive and it’s 10,000 times better than he ever imagined it to be — it made my heart melt.

Thank you.  Really, thank you!

Based on what I wrote above, my absolute favorite from the night… yes, there are more “perfect” images on my card, but this one makes me really happy.

I love this one. I told her to hold her hand up and work it and I stinkin’ love it.

Yes, that’s Alison’s furniture out on the driveway.  Truth be told, we really wanted the velvet couch out there.  Maybe for holiday cards?  Pretty please?

That’s the look I am talking about!

Waiting, patiently waiting.

And because no night is complete without a little rim lighting and flare…
