The blog has moved...

You've reached my old blog... In order to simplify my blog, my portfolio and my life, I combined my blog and site into one. Now you can find my "blog" entries on my Recent Work page. You can also view my portfolio, link to slideshows and client information, and locate anything else you might need all in one place.

This blog contains old session blog posts, and my failed 2011 attempt at "One Image a Day" project in which I force myself to shoot something each day, personal or professional, as a challenge to myself. I'd love to hear what you think of the images as they might slightly stray from the norm. We'll see if I can pick it up for 2012!

My moto this year.  Big display, big client wall collections, big exposure, big blog hits.  Starting next week, I’ll hopefully begin showcasing client wall collections and highlighting my new display guide.  I thought it might be helpful to show some prints, in correct scale, to give you an idea of what “Big” really means.  Prior to becoming a photographer, big to me was 11X14.  Then I printed 16X20s and thought “now THIS is what size should be  on my walls”  (to those of you laughing because there is nothing on my walls, please shut up, I hear you).  That said, I am actually now a believer of 20X24 and thinking “maybe I could go just a smidge larger, especially if it is a canvas.”

So here is the same print in 4X6, 5X7, 8X10, 11X14, 16X20 and 20X24.  Far away so you can see the scale, and up close just because my girl is so cute, dammit!

And she’s not mine.  I know, how bad is it that I am saying that when I have a daughter and nieces that I love so much?  This little girl isn’t even blood.  But she’s close, because really, after the shenanigans that her mom and I pulled for 10+ years in Newport, Nantucket, Boston, isn’t she sort of like my daughter once removed?

So from a technical perspective, not that you really care, you should know that this is Catherine straight out of the camera.  That is her skin, those are her lips, and her eyes are really that color.  She got a slight bump in curves and a sharpen for web, but that’s it.  And if you’re really a dork, you will be excited to know that I shot that at 1/125 f/3.2 at ::::::drumroll please::::: ISO 3200.  No noise reduction or anything else funky going on.  How’s that for amazing exposure with the Canon 5DM2 and 24-70L?

This is how I know it’s going to be a good day. No glitches getting into town (i.e. no flat tires), open space in Visitor Parking (I actually had quarters for the meter), a 50% off sale at Kiwi baby (even though I wasn’t supposed to be shopping)… and showing up to a home with a sign that reads “Mahalo” on the front door. I hummed the Mahalo song (from my website) the entire session.

It gets better. This little girl was awesome. She had her charm on the entire morning. Her parents were pretty cool (you know, for parents…) and they let us walk all over the neighborhood to find some shadows, steps, bricks and flowers. I had a blast.

“Mahalo, that means thank you, mahalo, mahalo, mahalo…” (imagine Laurie Berkner singing that, not me).

[This was about the 3rd shot out of the gates... I almost said "OK, I am finished, I can go home now."]

So here he is, in all his glory. This is as good as it gets with the eye contact and happiness when a camera is around. Every other image is blurry because he’s either running at me, to me, by me, from me.

If you happen to live in town and say “Awww, we used to have a shirt JUST like that…” It’s your shirt! Oh my God, it is! It came home from school with us one day when ours was _________ (dirty, wet, pooped on, covered with paint). We forgot to return it and now it’s sort of embarrassing. That said, if any of you post blog pics of your own child wearing size 2T Navy Talbots snow pants, you can officially keep them, I already covered my debt to the person that lent me those. We’re all square in the land of small town clothing swaps.

Coming soon… a little “guess who Janey looks like” quiz… willing to bet she surprises you!

Now you can be. Your sessions will come complete with a short video of our time together. Pretty cool, right?

I just reposted this session to Facebook because I finally got around to ordering Jenny some more prints… 5-6 months later, right? All good. I am already looking forward to being back in Erie in October, shooting with some friends and seeing kiddos (old and new). Oh, and of course by then perhaps I’ll have prints of the Rockery for Alex… dare to dream, sister, dare to dream.

Let me know what you think of the videos!
